We have embarked on a journey of practicing Wabi Sabi and Sashiko stitching in our decorative cushion covers.
Sashiko stitch is a traditional Japanese embroidery and mending technique that uses a simple running stitch to create geometric patterns on fabric, historically white thread on indigo-dyed cotton. We’ve spun a little MeganKyle magic adding our unique ‘homespun’ graffiti stitching to the traditional style.
What is Wabi Sabi? Embracing the essence of Imperfection. Celebrating the Japanese concept that honours slow living and the beauty of imperfection, aged items, raw items, handmade pieces, and natural materials. Finding the beauty in chaos.
What is the wabi-sabi style of decorating? The core idea of wabi-sabi is to embrace imperfection and impermanence. You can apply this concept to interior design byprioritizing simplicity, using earthy tones and colors, keeping your home clutter-free, adding lots of texture, and celebrating the everyday through imperfect and aged items.
Wabi Sabi style often involves using these materials in their raw and unprocessed state, allowing their inherent beauty to shine through. For example,a wooden tablemight be left with its natural grain and knots, while a stone floor might be left rough and unpolished.
My interpretation of this movement: To source beautiful global fabrics, leather remnants, vintage buttons, gently worn clothing (focus on denim and vintage silk kimonos from the early 20th Century) – all with slight blemishes and imperfections that share their soul story. The story of the people and their lives who previously wore or used the items.
My designs are handmade - sustainability meets bespoke. Perfectly imperfect - in tribute to the philosophy of WABI SABI. Intentional stitching in whimsical, chaotic (at times) patterns creates a simple, homespun element. The deliberate mixing of clean, straight stitching with ‘random’ moments of chaos allows a piece to breathe – to not be so ‘perfect’ that one doesn’t embrace its intended comfort in use.
This design style is not for everyone. You can find generic, mass manufactured versions of decor items in popular retail stores or online. My design ethos is to follow my heart. My goal is to bring liveable beauty into people’s lives. Creating pieces that resonate with my soul and hopefully yours too! Mindfully curated elements that are ethically sourced, carefully cleaned, designed, cut and sewn into a new story. Taking new form and purpose than their original design intention. At times with a goal of minimal imperfections (depending on the piece) and other times a focus on the imperfect. Using bright contrasting thread, bits and bobs treasured and collected along the way.
My wish is that you surround yourself with things you LOVE and that make you smile.
